About Us

Poppyseed Market

Our Story

What began in North Raleigh over 19 years ago as a casual deli has evolved into a full service eatery with menus that feature a variety of southern classics & new American style dishes. We use fresh, high quality ingredients & source locally when possible including Blue Sky Farms, low country seafood and Neomonde bakery. Supporting the amazing local & sustainable products NC has to offer not only benefits our state, the food tastes better for it.

Poppyseed Market gets its name from our beloved grandfather we called Poppy. He enjoyed great food but loved libations he called “Holy Water.” The Deli started with sandwiches and the notion was simple. Perfect all of the ingredients – meat, cheese, vegetables & bread. Make and roast our own turkey, brisket & corned beef. Poppyseed was an instant fit for N. Raleigh.

owner/Chef
Julia McGovern
Since 2006, Poppyseed Market has been Julia’s way of nourishing her community—through food, hospitality, and genuine connection.

Her dedication to quality, favoring thoughtful preparation, keeps the menu fresh and timeless.

Julia’s culinary perspective is shaped by her early years at Raleigh’s iconic Angus Barn, where she worked with owner Van Eure and gained invaluable lessons in hospitality. There, she learned the foundations of exceptional customer service and how to create memorable dining experiences.

In 2006, Julia appeared on Food Network’s Iron Chef America as sous chef to the winning Chef Walter Royal of the Angus Barn, an experience that further strengthened her commitment to craft, consistency, and guest-centered cooking.

What began over 19 years ago as a casual deli (Name inspired by Julia’s grandfather affectionately known as Poppy) has evolved into a full-service eatery serving Southern classics and New American fare made with locally sourced ingredients from Blue Sky Farms. The team’s dedication to quality and local sourcing runs deep.

It can’t be missed that Julia has a talent for cultivating an exceptional work environment that is reflected in the warmth of our team!
Catering MAnager
Brian Card
Brian joined Poppyseed Market in 2008 and has been one of the driving forces behind our daytime hustle ever since. He keeps our midday scene fast, hopping, and absolutely poppin’—serving up the kind of lunch that’s just as perfect for a quick bite here as it is for powering through at your desk.

When it comes to crafting well composed, flavor forward catering options, Brian’s our go to guy with the magic touch. And if the stars align, you might even catch him swapping the kitchen for the spotlight as the musical performer at one of our monthly wine tastings.
Manager
Breanna "Bre" McGovern
Bre has been a familiar face at Poppyseed Market since 2011. Known for wearing many hats—whether in the kitchen, front of house, or the office—she keeps our operation running smoothly while always being ready to greet you with a warm smile.

Dinner service is her main stage, where she ensures every guest enjoys a beautifully prepared meal and an exceptional experience. When she’s not here making everything feel effortless from behind the scenes, she’s probably around town enjoying a well earned Sunday brunch—her favorite way to relax and recharge!
